چکیده

The growth of statutory compensation for industrial injuries and illness has attracted considerable attention from historians of state welfare and students of organized labour in both Europe and North America. The rights of legal redress for disease and accidents in the workplace have become the subject of some debate among historians of occupational health and safety, most particularly in regard to asbestos-related illnesses. Among the most detailed and scholarly accounts of the subject in Britain are those by Peter Bartrip and his collaborators. In contrast to many accounts in labour and medical history which

The heart in the pneumoconiosis of coalminers.

The pneumoconiosis of coalminers is a primary disorder of the lungs that can cause pulmonary heart disease, a condition also called cor pulmonale. The occurrence of right heart changes in pneumoconiosis was noted by Pancoast and Pendergrass (1931). Dyson (1933 and 1934) described the radiological recognition of heart disease in pneumoconiosis, and in a review of 127 cases found 18 with evidence...

Dust concentrations and respiratory risks in coalminers: key risk estimates from the British Pneumoconiosis Field Research.

To help inform the setting of dust control standards in coalmines, this brief review summarises the most recent and reliable exposure-response relations, for damaging respiratory effects, derived from the Pneumoconiosis Field Research (PFR). Collecting data over 38 years in the British coal industry, this was a programme of prospective research on the respiratory health of coal miners, characte...

Mortality among workers receiving compensation awards for silicosis in Ontario 1940-85.

The mortality experience of 1190 miners and 289 surface industry workers receiving workers' compensation awards for silicosis in Ontario since 1940 has been studied up to mid-1985. Both groups were found to have a significantly increased mortality from lung cancer (miners' SMR: 230; surface workers' SMR: 302) and stomach cancer (miners' SMR: 188; surface workers' SMR: 366). Adjustment for smoki...

Radiological surveys of working quarrymen and quarrying communities in Caernarvonshire.

Interest in the possible occupational lung diseases associated with slate-quarrying appears to date from the Registrar-General's Decennial Supplement, 1921, on Occupational Mortality (Registrar-General, 1927). Britten's review (Britten, 1928) showed that slate-masons and slate-workers had a significantly raised mortality from respiratory tuberculosis although it was much lower than that of tina...

Alpha 1 antitrypsin and lung function in British coalminers.

Alpha 1 antitrypsin (alpha 1 AT) serum concentration was determined for a group of coalminers with particularly low levels of lung function, not thought to be explicable in terms of age and dust exposure, and compared with two other groups of coalminers who had average or above average lung function. There was no evidence for an alpha 1 AT deficiency in coalminers with poor lung function. On th...
